With about 30 schools around, this neighborhood is mostly composed of students (10000 for 5000 permanent inhabitants). The atmosphere in the city is like an open campus. This affects the permanent residents in good and bad ways.

To avoid an increase in crime, unemployment and drugs we have to find a way to rebuild the link between Saint-Gilles inhabitants and students around the question of sustainable and durable food.

Today, local snacks and international companies have a large amount of the local consommation. As we know, bad nutrition causes sickness and obesity. But not only, with many imported products, it decreases the quality of air and with an excess of production that causes lot of waste.

To inverse this trend, render good nutrition more accessible and access to a better health, we are trying to find responses in a global way. The mission is to sensitize people about being creators and users of alternative way to consume and to build a peaceful environnement.

What kind of collaborative services might be organized between students and inhabitants?

What is possible to exchange between these two generations?

And finally, how is it possible to demonstrate actions in the public space.

A lot of projects are already running in Norway, United Kingdom, Sweden, Belgium, Italy, Greece. The responses of private or public organisations are for exemple the construction of gardens in public spaces, auto-production, rooftop gardens, crowd-funding, local economics, collective kitchens, schools canteens, students restaurants, and also about the transmission of the local food practice.

To summarize, this project focus on issues of healthy and sustainable food. It is directly influenced by the commitment of students who are in the majority in the neighborhood. All this take place in partnership with «Ceinture Aliment-Terre Liège», «RECIPROCITY Design Liège 2012» and with the «EXPO MILAN 2015 – Feeding the planet» under DESIS, Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability.

The project aim to develop the neighborhood of St-Gilles in Liège around the question of the food and alimentation.
