Day 1 of the EU Policy Lab On-Site#1 Session began with a brief overview of the initiative by the Lab Core Team, in partnership with SDS / Strategic Design Scenarios. The Team presented the Lab’s double objective for this Session: to explore a new topic and scope new set of activities on ‘Social Change in a Hyperconnected Era’; and at the same time to further shape the EU Policy Lab using a design and learning by doing approach. We expressed our openness for experimentation and maximum feedback from participants during the two days. Our guiding idea throughout the Session was to find convergence of interests between stakeholders and the Commission, and create synergies with participants on specific items emerging from the process.

The framework of the day was presented to participants. Participants were previously divided in 5 groups (yellow, green, blue, orange and pink). Speed presentations made by members of the Unit would trigger groups to work on making flyers of “future events” on themes of Social Change in a Hyperconnected Era (more below). The outcome of the day would be a set of 20-25 flyers in total.

An iterative process begun: 5 rounds of Speed Presentations made by members of the Unit (15-20 min) followed by each group working on flyers of future events inspired by the presentations (20-25 min).

The Speed Presentations were about exploring the topic of “Social Change in a Hyperconnected Era” through surprising examples/cases/situations/initiatives/projects/findings. The format used for each Speed Presentation:

– 5-10 slides in total;
– each slide  presented for 20-40 seconds, as appropriate;
– for a total of 5 minutes.

After each round of Speed Presentations, groups opened a box containing the presentations’ printed slides (A6 format), and started to compose their flyer using the slides, tape, pens, post-its, etc…

15:15 – 16:15 | Ready-to-go

After very intensive 5 rounds, groups had time to make sense of the flyers they had created: adding explanations, amending previous ideas, clustering flyers, or even remaking them. The objective was for groups to produce up to 5 flyers.

16:15 – 16:45 | Walk Around and Flyers Pitch

Groups chose a “champion” who pitched the flyers to the other groups in the Walk Around session (1 min per flyer, alternated between groups). Groups briefly discussed overlaps, improvements, and feedback in preparation for Day 2.

We had a moment for feedback at the end of the day through a Fishbowl exercise. Participants seated in chairs in a circle-like configuration, and moved to the most inner circle to speak. Lively discussion was centered on evaluation of the purpose of the session, the activities of the day and suggestions for improvement.
