Pecha-Kucha/Speed-presentation discussion

This morning, the team was gathered to discuss the pecha-kucha/speed presentation format. Some short presentation format exist and SDS presented two of them. The first one, the well-known Pecha-Kucha format. 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide. The second one, specially adapted by SDS, is the “speed presentation” format. 3 slides, 3 minutes. In between those 2 formats, the EU policy innovation lab, shall create or find its own format, adapted to its needs… and this was the subject of this morning meeting.

The presentation of the two formats can be found here in .ptt or below in video :

As a reminder, this speed presentation format is proposed to explore, in a different way, the topic of the research (in our case : “Social change in an hyperconnected era”). Usually, “foresighters” conduct a broad literature review before digging in the subject more specifically. In this case, it has been chosen to keep the subject open a bit longer… and explore it through a collective exercice of finding suprising and inspiring content/data/case/story… This more intuitive approach to look at a topic is interesting as it is open to non-trivial and alternative/unusual content, which is often hard to find in academic/scientific literature reviews.

In the end, this speed presentation format shall provide the team with a wide range of surprising and inspiring sub-subjects to investigate and should provide answers to those pending questions :

– What’s worth working on ?
– What triggers the interest of the audience (including DGs and policymakers as well as outside stakeholders) ?

NEXT STEPS

To start with and help define the policy lab’s speed presentation format, the core team (with SDS) will prepare presentations as an internal exercise that will be “criticized” (constructively) by the Unit team.

This “trial” session will be held on the 24th of March and only the core team + SDS will prepare presentations.

The “real” session will be held during the 1st “On-site session”, on the 20th of April. In this session, everyone (the whole team) will have prepared a presentation and “close-close friends” shall be present. In the afternoon, presenters will adjust their presentations depending on what has been said in the morning (deleting doubles, rearranging the order,etc.).

On the following day, the 21st of April, a new round of presentations will take place (with the improved presentations of the day before) but this time in front of “friendly” stakeholders but not as close as the previous ones. Those “friends” may come from the inside (Commission) or from the outside… and shall be between 5 to 8 per session.
