Day 2 of the EU Policy Lab On-Site#1 Session began again with a brief overview of the initiative for the new guests. The Team presented the purpose of this First Session mostly as capacity building and open exploration of a topic with our “close friends”, to be followed by more sessions in upcoming months. There was a quick round of “who is in the room”.

The Team made a recap of Day 1 and presented the framework of the day. Groups from Day 1 were reshuffled and reintroduced. In a World Café style, previous “champions” would present the flyers made in Day 1. New groups would select up to 5 flyers (from the total set of 20-25) and compose 1 final poster. The objective of Day 2 was to identify themes the Policy Lab could work on, and to suggest innovative ideas for Lab activities to dig into the themes.

10:00 – 11:15 | World Café

“Champions” from the groups of Day 1 pitched the flyers to the new/reshuffled groups (5 min of 3-5 flyers). The pitches were followed by a discussion (10 min) within the new groups, most of the times in dialogue with the “champions”, posing questions, clarifying some ideas, etc. We provided participants with triangle ‘WARNING’ shaped post-its containing the question: what kind of opportunity/challenge can you identify? During the 10 min discussion, participants filled out and sticked the post-its into flyers.

In order to introduce new inputs and fresh ideas, in each group 1 new guest and 1 member present the previous day, were tasked to decide up to 5 flyers (including 1 new element/photo if they wanted) on which they wanted to work in the following session.

11:30 – 12:30 | Building Group Themes

After selecting up to 5 flyers, the groups assembled on composing a new and final poster, using flyers or parts of it, pens, markers, tape, post-its, and other materials they wanted. The objectives were: 1) to develop theme or themes for the Policy Lab to work on (using the flyers as starting points, with full freedom to broaden or deepen previous explorations, reshuffle/divide/invent/ change topics in flyers), and 2) to come up with creative/innovative ideas for Lab activities (with freedom to identify for instance approaches, outcomes, partners and other elements).

12:30 – 13:20 | Group Presentations

New “champions” (with preference to new guests) presented the groups final posters to the rest of the participants, who moved around listening to each 5m presentation.

13:20– 13:40 | Closing of Day 2

Day 2 also closed with a Fishbowl exercise to ask participants for their welcomed feedback. Another lively discussion followed about the Lab’s mission, foreseen challenges for our innovative approach inside the Commission, future steps and possible directions.
